Cerita bermula ketika pada tahun 2307 , persediaan bahan bakar fosil telah habis digunakan, sehingga manusia yang hidup zaman itu membuat sistem pembangkit tenaga yang mengorbit di atas Bumi, dan ditopang oleh tiga elevator orbit. Namun dengan adanya sistem tesebut, negara negara penghasil minyak terkena imbas dari aktifitas sistem tersebut, sehingga mulai melawan para reformis yang melawan hukum "The Promised Land of God".
Dengan latar belakang seperti itu, terjadilah perang berkepanjangan di bumi ini hanya untuk memperoleh bahan bakar dan energi yang akhirnya mengarah pada pembentukan sebuah organisasi militer pribadi, yang disebut dengan Celestial Being.
Tujuan dibentuknya Celestial Being, adalah untuk menghapus segala macam bentuk perang di muka bumi dengan menggunakan mobile suit humanoid yang bernama GUNDAM.
